Today, a few Wolverines — including Michigan football head coach Jim Harbaugh — addressed the media after their 30-3 win on Saturday. JJ McCarthy, the team’s junior quarterback, had an incredible game last weekend, perhaps more so than many even realize. Here is the latest buzz from Harbaugh and others on what McCarthy can do.

JJ McCarthy has an incredible game against East Carolina

JJ McCarthy completed 26 of his 30 passes for 280 yards and three touchdowns with no interceptions on Saturday — he was also the top-graded quarterback on throws between 10-19 yards and in the red zone, per PFF. Today, Jim Harbaugh gave even more on McCarthy and what he can do for the Wolverines.

“(JJ McCarthy) was magnificent,” Jim Harbaugh said this morning. “That was 26 for 30, and that’s the highest percentage, 87.6, in the history of Michigan football for anybody that’s thrown 30 or more passes. So it was tremendous downfield, tough throws, tight-window throws. Could have had even more, I think, if JJ wouldn’t have been flushed on the one because of the protection and could have gotten the ball to Colston — he probably could have gone for a lot more. But all that being said, it’s tremendous. Really proud of him, the way he played. The pass protection was outstanding. And it’s step one. It’s step one in the process, and JJ will reset and go back to work this week.

“We’ve talked about him (JJ McCarthy), he’s improved in so many ways,” Jim Harbaugh continued. “And understanding the offense, coaching it to other players — I see that. It’s ever-increasing. Good step one, and reset, and get back after it this week.”

Michigan football is in good hands

This weekend, Michigan football will take on UNLV at the Big House in hopes of beginning the 2023 season 2-0. If JJ McCarthy can continue to impress, the nation will be on notice as the Wolverines enter conference play after taking on Bowling Green.
