Michigan football quarterback wants his coach back

Today, after having one of the best performances of his career, Michigan football quarterback JJ McCarthy had a chance to explain his desire to get head coach Jim Harbaugh back. Before the game, McCarthy and a few of his teammates donned “Free Harbaugh” shirts in support of their suspended head coach, who will also be missing Week 2 and Week 3.

Michigan football quarterback JJ McCarthy was wearing a “Free Harbaugh” shirt before and after the game today. Why?

“It’s as simple as this: I just want my coach back. As simple as that. I just want him back,” JJ McCarthy explained after the Wolverines’ 30-3 season-opening win.

JJ McCarthy didn’t miss a beat today — he completed nearly every pass and had one of the most impressive Week 1 performances of any Michigan football quarterback in recent history. According to JJ McCarthy, it was all a tribute to coach Jim Harbaugh.

“Yeah, that was definitely a tribute to Coach Harbaugh,” said Michigan football quarterback JJ McCarthy when asked about the Wolverines’ I-formation. “I think he did that back in 2015 or 2016 when he first got here, and we just wanted to tribute him in some way, and it was actually funny — how many yards would get on that play? Three or four? Yeah, we had to get more than three. Three was okay, but anything less than that is a bad tribute. So that was pretty cool to do that.”

Next weekend, Jim Harbaugh will still be suspended, but offensive play-caller Sherrone Moore will be back on the sidelines. With a lot to prove this year, expect Michigan football and its junior quarterback to continue to play with a chip on their shoulder.
