Los Angeles Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh is bringing another member of his Michigan staff to the next level. As first reported by Tom Pelissero Monday, the Chargers are set to hire Kirk Campbell as an offensive assistant. Campbell served as U-M’s offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach in 2024.

Campbell was with the Wolverines for two seasons prior to 2024, including one as quarterbacks coach (2023) and one as an offensive analyst (2022). He had been coaching in college since 2009 and it will be his first time in the NFL. Campbell helped develop Michigan quarterback J.J. McCarthy into a tenth overall draft pick, and he will now get to work with Justin Herbert.

The Chargers went 11-6 in their first season under Harbaugh, losing to the Houston Texans 32-12 in the AFC wild card on Jan. 11. Over the last 11 games of the regular season they were 8-3, but the 15-2 Kansas City Chiefs took the division title.

The Los Angeles defense was first in the league in points allowed per game in 2024 (17.7). The offense was good enough to win games, but there wasn’t enough explosiveness, and the interior of the line didn’t seem to be up to snuff.

Pro Football Focus (PFF) recently released a mock draft in which the Chargers trade up to No. 16 to grab Boise State star running back Ashton Jeanty. Los Angeles finished 17th in the league in rushing yards in 2024, and Harbaugh surely would like to see that ranking rise next season. If they stay put, the Chargers will pick at No. 22.
