Michigan football has come under a lot of attention in recent days after the NCAA launched an investigation into alleged sign-stealing. The investigation is already impacting the program and could have ramifications for the Wolverines’ playoff chances. Earlier today, The Athletic broke news that Michigan football was ready to make Jim Harbaugh the highest-paid coach in the Big Ten before the investigation was announced.

Because of the program’s success in the past two seasons, Michigan was eager to strike a deal with Harbaugh to lock him down, especially with ongoing rumors of Harbaugh potentially leaving for the NFL.

A new report from The Athletic revealed that Michigan was ready to make Harbaugh the highest-paid coach in the Big Ten. However, due to the recent sign-stealing investigation launched by the NCAA, all contract negotiations are currently on pause.

Despite hopes of securing a new deal before the month’s end, it appears Michigan football will have to be patient for a new contract. The pause in negotiation could also motivate Harbaugh’s NFL return more than ever after this season.

For now, Harbaugh cannot comment on the investigation and is currently focused on the last five games of the regular season. Tonight, Michigan will travel to East Lansing for the biggest rivalry game in Michigan. Kickoff is set for 7:30 EST.
