So far, I love everything about new Michigan basketball head coach Dusty May. The man just gets it and he reinforced that feeling on Monday as pictures of John Beilein at practice started circulating on social media.

Beilein is considered by many to be the greatest Michigan basketball head coach of all time. He didn’t win a national championship, but he coached the Wolverines to the title game twice, as well as the Final Four two times. The man also won two Big Ten regular-season titles and two Big Ten tournament titles.

John Beilein was Michigan basketball

Beilein set the standard for what Michigan basketball can be. He also helped hire Dusty May, who is someone he saw that could return the Wolverines to what they were under Beilein.

It wasn’t easy and Beilein had his own way of doing things. He didn’t offer recruits until they took visits to campus and he also didn’t chase five-star prospects. He found players who fit his system (and Michigan) and he developed them.

That’s what Michigan basketball needs to be about under Dusty May — development. The transfer portal helps and teams can get better fast, but you still have to find the right pieces and know how to mold them into a team.

That’s the challenge for Dusty May, who added nine new players to the Michigan basketball roster. But it’s good to see he’s leaning on Beilein, as he said he would, and it’s also great to see John Beilein back in the Michgan basketball facility.
