LOOK: Michigan football breakout candidates making huge plays during camp

In just 19 days, the 2023 season will begin for the Wolverines, who are set to host East Carolina on September 2nd. While fans and media are not allowed to watch any of fall camp, there have been a few sneak peeks posted on the Wolverines’ social media, including two Michigan football breakout candidates — wideout Tyler Morris and linebacker Jaydon Hood — making big plays during fall camp.

Last week, veteran linebacker Mike Barrett was asked about how this year’s LB corps is looking. When responding, he identified a less-known player who has been standing out thus far during the Wolverines’ fall camp — Jaydon Hood. Hood is a 6-foot-1, 225-pound junior linebacker for the Wolverines, and while his name has not been called much thus far, he is a player to watch (No. 34) throughout the coming season.

“Jaydon Hood, I feel like he’s made a big step from last year,” Mike Barrett said. “He’s coming along really fast learning and being able to help step into that next spot.”

In addition to Jaydon Hood, another rising star has been identified by a few of the Wolverines’ top players — sophomore wide receiver Tyler Morris. According to JJ McCarthy, who played high school ball with Morris before transferring to IMG, he and Morris have a unique and special connection.

Tyler Morris is a sophomore wide receiver for the Wolverines right now, and while he has not stood out much so far, it sounds like a much bigger role is waiting for him this season. Morris is donning the No. 8 this year, which was previously worn by JJ McCarthy’s favorite wideout from the 2022 team — Ronnie Bell.

“Tyler Morris, he’s gonna make a big name for himself this year,” JJ McCarthy said. “I’ve had that connection built since my sophomore year in high school. He’s gonna do great things…

“That’s like a special connection to me, going back to Naz (Nazareth Academy), I used to call him Simba, I would be Mufasa, stuff like that,” McCarthy continued. “Going back to 8th grade, freshman year, when we played 7-on-7 together, that’s my guy, that’s my day one. It’s one of those things where I feel like I could close my eyes and throw the ball, and I know where he’s going to be out of his break. Having that with everyone is my goal right now but with T-Mo it’s just like that (*snaps*), money.”
