ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Today, for the first time since fall camp began last Wednesday, the media had the opportunity to speak with several of the Wolverines’ top players at Schembechler Hall. Junior Michigan football quarterback JJ McCarthy, entering his second season as the Wolverines’ full-time starter, discussed his “special connection” with a potential rising star in the Maize and Blue: sophomore wide receiver Tyler Morris.

During the initial phase of JJ McCarthy’s high school career, before transferring to IMG Academy in Florida, McCarthy and Tyler Morris were teammates. Despite McCarthy’s decision to relocate down south halfway through his high school years, this former offensive duo is once again united in the same uniform, both gearing up for the Wolverines this fall.

Today, during the Wolverines’ initial fall camp presser, Michigan football quarterback JJ McCarthy had the opportunity to break down his unique relationship with Morris and express his enthusiasm about what the upcoming season may hold for himself and sophomore wide receiver Tyler Morris.

“Yeah, that’s like a special connection to me,” Michigan football quarterback JJ McCarthy said earlier today. “I mean going back to (high school) — I used to call him Simba; I would be Mufasa, just stuff like that.

“Going back to 8th grade, freshman year, when we played 7-on-7 together — that’s my guy, that’s my day one. It’s one of those things where I feel like I could close my eyes and throw the ball and I know where he is going to be out of his break. Having that with everyone is my goal, but with (Tyler Morris) it’s just like that.”

Tyler Morris will be donning No. 8 this upcoming season, a number that was previously adorned by star wide receiver Ronnie Bell. A season ago, Michigan football witnessed a remarkable rapport between No. 9 (JJ McCarthy) and No. 8 (Ronnie Bell) — judging by early fall camp indications, fans can anticipate a continuation of this synergy with Tyler Morris during the 2023 season.
