Every championship football team has those unsung heroes – the players who might not grab the headlines but are the beating heart of the squad. These are the players who embody grit, selflessness, and leadership, contributing to the team in ways that go far beyond the stat sheet.
Max Bredeson is a perfect example of such a player for Michigan football.
Now in his fourth year at Michigan, Bredeson has quietly become a cornerstone of the Wolverines’ potent running game. As a lead blocker from his H-back and fullback positions, Bredeson has paved the way for stars like Blake Corum, JJ McCarthy, and Donovan Edwards.
While others may receive the accolades, Max has been the unsung “sixth man” of Michigan’s offensive line – the unit that won the prestigious Joe Moore Award in 2022 as the best in the nation.

Anything But Ordinary for Max Bredeson
Bredeson’s path to Michigan was anything but ordinary, which only adds to his unique story. Hailing from Arrowhead High School in Hartland, Wisconsin, Max wasn’t initially a blocker but a quarterback, earning Conference Player of the Year honors and honorable mention All-State recognition.
Despite his success, he wasn’t heavily recruited, remaining relatively unknown until Michigan saw his potential and offered him a preferred walk-on spot.
Early Days at U-M
In his freshman year, Bredeson played just one game, but the coaching staff quickly realized they had a hidden gem. At 6-foot-2, 240 pounds, his power and work ethic stood out, earning him the respect of both teammates and coaches.
By the time Michigan captured the National Championship in 2023, Bredeson had solidified his role as a crucial element of the Wolverines’ offense.
His impact as a bruising blocker has been widely recognized, yet his influence extends beyond his on-field contributions.
Finally, an Official Team Captain
Now entering his senior season, Bredeson’s role has expanded even further.
Wearing #44, Max has been voted a team captain for the 2024 season – a true testament to his leadership and dedication.
More than just a pivotal player in Michigan’s offense, he’s a unifying force, helping to hold the team together.
Expect Max to take on an even bigger role this season, clearing paths for Alex Orji, Donovan Edwards, and Kalel Mullings. Yet, it’s his leadership qualities that truly set him apart. His ability to inspire his teammates and set the tone is invaluable, even if it doesn’t always show up in traditional statistics.
Within the walls of Schembechler Hall, every coach and player understands the full scope of what Max Bredeson brings to the Wolverines. He’s appreciated by the entire program to the “Max,” and by the end of the season, his value will be clear to every Michigan fan as well.
