After downing Alabama in overtime, 27-20 in the iconic Rose Bowl Game, the Michigan football program is on to bigger and better: the national championship against No. 2 Washington (14-0, 10-0 PAC-12). After the Huskies beat Texas in a thriller, Washington football star Michael Penix, the team’s elite quarterback, explained how U-Dub is staying focused heading into the title game next Monday.

Michigan football program turning the page to national championship bout

Michigan football and Washington football — two teams that will be in the Big Ten next year. Speaking of the Big Ten, Michael Penix, Washington’s Heisman finalist quarterback, has seen the Wolverines before during his days with Tom Allen’s Indiana Hoosiers. Of course, much has changed for both programs since that COVID-19 season in 2020, but Penix is no stranger to the Wolverines.

Washington football star Michael Penix explains mental prep for Michigan

After he and his team downed Texas in a Sugar Bowl thriller on Monday, Michael Penix explained how Washington football is staying prepped and alert for Michigan football in the national championship game.

“Just keeping a 1-0 mindset,” Penix said. “That’s what it’s always been about all year. Yeah, we’re going to celebrate this win. But we’re going to have a quick turnaround. You have to be ready for the national championship. We’re going to be playing a good team. But, man, it’s been amazing. Everybody collectively just continues to believe and continues to trust the process.

“That’s the thing about us, I feel like each and every player on this team, fell in love with the process. And I’ve said it since – I think it was around fall camp, that our goal was to win the national championship. And some people probably didn’t believe us. But we had the opportunity to do that. So we’re not going to get distracted and forget about that goal.

“Obviously, this was a step towards it. And it’s given us the opportunity to be able to play in that game. But we’re still motivated. We still have more things we want to accomplish. And the natty is right here in front of us. And our focus is going to be on that, and we’re going to be ready for the game.”

seasons at stake in less than a week

Washington and Michigan are clearly the two best teams, and the final two undefeated teams, in college football heading into the national championship game. Next Monday, we should get an elite showdown: JJ McCarthy vs. Michael Penix, Michigan football vs. Washington football, Big Ten vs. future Big Ten.

The season comes down to this final contest, and while both teams are coming off of nail-biting wins over top-ranked competition, the Wolverines and Huskies will undoubtedly leave everything on the field one last time with everything at stake.
