As the April 26th close of the transfer portal gets closer, players who have yet to commit are making their decisions and many programs are putting the finishing touches on their fall rosters. Joining sophomore Jordan Marshall and fellow transfer Justice Haynes in the running back room is Princeton transfer John Volker, who committed just two days after UMass transfer CJ Hester.

Though Marshall and Haynes are likely to be the leading ball carriers, after the loss of Benjamin Hall to the transfer portal, Volker and Hester should help add even more depth to the position. Both transfers have a fair amount of experience under their belt, so it will be interesting to see how the competition plays out.

Volker and Hester Both Come With Some Experience

Volker comes to Michigan as a grad transfer who saw action in each of his four seasons at Princeton, including his sophomore season which was cut short due to injury. He is coming off an explosive senior season, where he served as a captain, and had 89 carries for a total of 514 yards and six touchdowns. With those stats, Volker’s size and speed will surely make him an asset.

Hester is making his return to the state of Michigan, after starting his freshman year at Western Michigan before transferring to UMass. In his sophomore season, Hester rushed for a total of 529 yards from 119 carries resulting in four touchdowns, on top of 14 receptions for a total of 58 passing yards. His versatility should prove beneficial to the overall offensive picture.

Volker has one year of eligibility remaining, and Hester has two, so with both of them coming off of a fairly successful season, the competition between one another should be fierce. If one thing’s for certain, it’s that Tony Alford has quite a bit of talent to work with in his first year as the RB coach.
