Michigan baseball took care of Michigan State rather easily over the weekend, outscoring its rival 23-9 over the three-game set in Ann Arbor. The Wolverines also beat MSU 11-7 on March 12, and it’s the first season-sweep for the maize and blue since 2022.
Dating back to its win over Bowling Green on April 22, Michigan has won four games in a row and sits at 27-17 (11-10 Big Ten) on the season.
Michigan baseball dominates in-state rival MSU
In game one against the Spartans Friday, Michigan did its damage in the second and fourth innings en route to an 8-2 win. Centerfielder Greg Pace Jr. led the way offensively, going 2-for-3 with four RBIs, including a three-run homer in the fourth. Starting pitcher Kurt Barr pitched 6.0 innings and allowed one earned run.
Michigan took the second game 9-2 on Saturday, and Pace Jr. found a way to up his previous performance. The junior went 4-for-4 at the plate with four runs, a double and another (solo) home run. Not to be outdone, second baseman Mitch Voit went 3-for-5 with five RBIs, including a triple and a three-run homer to give him a team-high of ten.
David Lally Jr. got the win for the Wolverines on the mound in game two, turning in 6.2 innings of work with four strikeouts and one earned run. Grant Bradley finished the job with two strikeouts and one earned run in 2.1 innings.
Game three nearly got away from Michigan, but it held on for a 6-5 victory. The Wolverines scored all of their runs on five hits in the first inning. The baseball looked more like a beach ball to shortstop Benny Casillas at the plate, and he led Michigan with four hits in five at-bats on the day. MSU slowly crept back into the game, but Will Rogers stepped in for the last four innings to earn his seventh save of the season.
Michigan jumped to No. 7 in the Big Ten standings with the three-game sweep, moving ahead of Penn State and Indiana in the process. With just over two weeks left in the regular season, it could be just what the Wolverines need to get on a roll before the postseason.
