Official visits often tell the tale of a recruitment and when it comes to Michigan basketball transfer target Jamir Watkins, that could end up being the case. That would be good news because right now, the Wolverines are the only team expected to get a visit.

Jon Rothstein reported earlier this week that six teams were still being considered by Watkins. Michigan basketball was among them along with St. John’s, Cincinnati, Florida State, Oregon, and Kansas State.

Then on Tuesday, Rothstein reported that Watkins was going to visit St. John’s and Michigan basketball. But another report clarified that the 6-foot-7 forward will only visit U-M, at least for now.

Michigan in a good spot for Jamir Watkins

Watkins is ranked as the top available player in the transfer portal according to On3.com. He averaged 15.6 points per game last season as well as six rebounds, 2.3 assists, and 1.9 steals. The 6-foot-7 forward would fill Michigan’s biggest roster need.

Michigan could use another scorer and playmaker, but the Wolverines also need another defender who can guard the four. Right now, Danny Wolf, Sam Walters, and Jace Howard might be the best options. That’s one reason why some fans have suggested that Wolf won’t start alongside Vlad Goldin.

Dusty May did say that the two players would get plenty of minutes next to each other, but with Watkins, the Wolverines would have an option to guard an athletic four who can shoot.

May did a stellar job of landing transfers this spring if they visited and if Watkins doesn’t visit anywhere else Michigan basketball should be able to seal the deal.
