The first AP Poll of the hoops season was released on Monday afternoon, and while they weren’t ranked, Michigan basketball did receive votes.

At the top, the UConn Huskies came in at No. 3 after back-to-back national championships, sitting behind Alabama and Kansas respectively.

More on Michigan Basketball in the AP Poll

Michigan didn’t crack the top 25, but it seems new head coach Dusty May has people paying attention to the hardwood in Ann Arbor.

The Wolverines received 19 votes to be included in the preseason poll. Illinois (92), Michigan State (29) and Ohio State (29) are the only other Big Ten teams left off the list with more votes.

The four Big Ten teams featured in the top 25 are Purdue (14), Indiana (17), UCLA (22) and Rutgers (25). As a conference usually known for football, the SEC has nine teams in the poll. The Big 12 (6) is the only other conference with more teams ranked than the Big Ten.

Looking Ahead at the Wolverines’ Chances to Be Top 25 Team

Michigan is coming off an 8-24 season under head coach Juwan Howard. With May at the helm, there is a newfound optimism around the program. May brought Vladislov Goldin, a seven foot center, with him from his final-four FAU team. May also brought in five other transfers, and all but one had four-star ratings in the portal. If everything pans out in favor of the Wolverines, the rest of the country could be in for a surprise.
