Michigan football (7-5, 5-4 Big Ten) found a way to beat No. 2 Ohio State (10-2, 7-2) for its first road win of the season on Saturday. The Wolverines made it an ugly game, and they were much better suited as they came out with the 13-10 win.

Following the final whistle, a Michigan player was waving a flag seemingly trying to plant it in the middle of the field. Senior OSU DE Jack Sawyer ripped it out of his hands, and a large scrum broke out nearby. Michigan RB Kalel Mullings called it “classless” after the game.

How Michigan Upset No. 2 Ohio State

The Buckeyes averaged 38.9 points per game heading into ‘The Game’. 10 points is the least Ohio State has scored in a regular season game since losing 10-7 to MSU in 2011. Michigan not only likely ended head coach Ryan Day’s tenure in Columbus, but it also knocked OSU out of the Big Ten championship game.

Early in the second quarter the Buckeyes had the ball with a 3-0 lead deep in their own territory. Michigan DB Aamir Hall picked off Will Howard and set his team up with prime field position. Two plays later, RB Kalel Mullings pounded in a one yard touchdown to give the Wolverines a 7-3 lead. OSU then put together a ten play drive down to the Michigan 20, but it ended with a missed field goal.

The game was tied 10-10 at halftime, and it was clear OSU wasn’t ready for the way Michigan came out. The Wolverines didn’t record a single sack in the game, but they still put a fair amount of pressure on Howard.

The second half began with each team punting and throwing an interception, respectively. OSU’s interception of Davis Warren in the third quarter set it up on the Michigan 12 yard line. The Buckeyes didn’t gain a single yard on three plays and missed another field goal. The Wolverines proceeded to march down the field on 15 plays and take the game into the fourth quarter, but Warren threw another interception, this time at the goal line.

The Michigan defense put its foot down and forced a three and out. With just over six minutes left, the Wolverines took over five minutes off the clock and kicked a 21 yard go-ahead field goal. Michigan kicker Dominic Zvada was clutch in the win, as he also hit a 54 yarder near the end of the first half.

Mullings ended with 32 carries for 116 yards and the lone Michigan touchdown. The Wolverines won the rushing battle 172-77, and its been a key stat in the rivalry for more than two decades. With the win, fourth-year seniors will graduate 4-0 against the team down south.
