Michigan defensive end Josaiah Stewart (0) sacks USC quarterback Miller Moss (7) during the first half at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor on Saturday, Sept. 21, 2024.

Senior Michigan football edge defender Josaiah Stewart has been leading the Wolverines on and off the field this season, and now he’s officially a team captain.

Wolverines’ head coach Sherrone Moore announced the move on Monday’s edition of the Inside Michigan Football radio show.

“We took the captains to one more,” Moore said. “We added Josaiah Stewart as a captain. A guy that we think has really done everything the right way. He plays as good as anybody in the country, but does it all with extreme energy. He’s just such a leader and such a voice, and I want him to use it.”

Stewart joins running back Donovan Edwards, fullback/tight end Max Bredeson, defensive back Rod Moore, and safety Makari Paige in the captain room.

Josaiah Stewart’s Reaction to Being Named A Captain

After revealing the news, Moore said Stewart didn’t see it coming.

“He was pretty surprised, kinda shocked but super happy and excited for the opportunity to be a voice on the team,” Moore said. “And he deserves it.”

Through six games, Stewart leads the Wolverines with five sacks and 8.5 tackles for loss, and he missed a game because of injury.

The senior is also one of two Michigan defenders with a forced fumble this season (Zeke Berry). As the highest-graded player in the Big Ten, Stewart has found great success in his second season in the program after making the move from Coastal Carolina.

Moore said the leaders on the team have stayed accountable.

“The cool thing I see, especially in this bye week, is just watching guys not attack people but attack problems,” Moore said. “Anything that they see, they point it out. I meet with the captains every week, and there are different things that they’re not afraid to acknowledge, things that are going on. It’s really cool to have a bunch of guys that are leaders on your team.”
