In just 25 days, No. 1 Michigan football (13-0, Big Ten Champions) and No. 4 Alabama (12-1, SEC Champions) will face off at the Rose Bowl (College Football Playoff semi-final) for a shot at competing for a national championship. On Wednesday, it was reported that the Crimson Tide are losing a notable member of their coaching staff: Coleman Hutzler — the team’s outside linebackers coach and special teams coordinator — will reportedly be joining Mississippi State.
Michigan Football: Alabama coach hired by Mississippi State Bulldogs
Now, Before I get too in-depth on who Alabama is losing, I will preface that no one is 100% sure what impact this will have on Bama’s coaching staff for the Rose Bowl game. That said, insiders of the Crimson Tide seem to suspect that he will be pulling some doubt duty, acting as Bama’s OLB and special teams coach while also preparing for his role with the Mississippi State Bulldogs.
Nick Saban first hired Hultzer from Ole Miss in January of 2022 — since then, he has been coaching on the defensive side of the football and coordinating Alabama’s special teams.
After going 5-7 this fall, including a 1-7 SEC record, Mississippi State decided to bring in a new coaching staff. Among these new coaches will be Alabama’s Coleman Hutzler, who will be joining the Bulldogs as their defensive coordinator, according to Ross Dellenger of Yahoo! Sports.
I doubt that this has much impact on how Alabama performs in the Rose Bowl, especially since it sounds like he will still be with the Tide for their CFP run, but it’s definitely worth noting as Michigan football looks to claim its first College Football Playoff win.
