Michigan Football has officially announced the kickoff times for each of their first five games, with the season opener against New Mexico kicking off at 7:30pm under the lights at the Big House. With students back on campus in the August heat, this should be about as warm a welcome to back to the Big House for the Wolverines as they could possibly hope for.
This year marks the second season in a row with a 7:30 kickoff for the home opener, and if last year’s 30-10 win over Fresno St. was any indication, this should be an absolutely electrifying way to start the season for the Wolverines. New Mexico ended their 2024 season at 5-7, so they’ll be looking to start the 2025 season on a strong note, which should make them a relatively formidable opponent and an entertaining season opener for Michigan.
Michigan Plays in Back-to-Back Night Games to Open the Season
After the home opener against New Mexico, Michigan travels down south to take on Oklahoma for yet another prime time night game. Though Michigan had a much more successful end to their 2024 season than Oklahoma did, the two teams were pretty evenly matched throughout the season. Going into the 2025 matchup, the Sooners will have the home field advantage, but given that Oklahoma is Michigan head coach Sherrone Moore’s alma mater, there is quite a bit at stake in this game.
This year’s matchup against the Sooners will be the second ever matchup between the two teams in history. What’s more, it will be almost 50 years later, their first and only matchup having occurred on New Years Day in 1976, when Oklahoma won 14-6. Coming off a night game in week one, the Wolverines should be just as energized and ready to take on the Sooners in week two, with all eyes on them in prime time on network TV.
The 2025 season will be the first in Michigan football’s nearly 150-year history where they will begin the season with back-to-back night games in weeks one and two. Having closed out the season in 2024 on a massive high, the prime time kickoffs shouldn’t be the only thing to make this year’s season historic.
