Michigan football coach guns down strength of schedule complaints

This year’s Michigan football schedule isn’t the toughest, but that may not matter too much.

It’s well known that the Wolverines do not have the hardest non-conference schedule in the nation — they beat ECU yesterday, host UNLV this weekend, and will conclude the non-conference slate with Bowling Green. That said, after the Wolverines’ 30-3 victory yesterday, Michigan football coach Jesse Minter (interim) gunned down any gripes with Michigan’s strength of schedule.

The outside narrative surrounding the Michigan football schedule is that the Wolverines are copping out by playing soft teams. Now, to be fair, Michigan is not playing the same caliber teams as others, such as Penn State, who beat WVU yesterday. That said, the Wolverines have to face Penn State, Ohio State, Michigan State, and more this year, so it’s not like there are no hurdles on the schedule right now.

Yesterday, Jesse Minter had this to say about Michigan football:

“To shortchange any win in college football, I think, is ridiculous,” the Michigan football coach said. “So these guys over the years have played really well in these types of environments, have played really well in these types of games. I think anytime you get a chance to play against another team, you really want to play like it’s not about them. You want to play up to the standard that you have for yourself. And so, our guys just really wanted to play well.

“It’s certainly great to play against other teams and take these first three games to number one, win, most importantly, because that allows our goals to stay intact,” Jesse Minter continued. “And to get better each week. And so it’ll be fun to try to make those improvements going into week two.”

While UNLV does not pose a threat to Michigan football on paper, the Wolverines are about to get back to work prepping for the Rebels, who make the trip to Ann Arbor for a 3:30 PM (EST) kickoff on Saturday.
