Yesterday, the Wolverines kicked off their 2023 season with a win, defeating the East Carolina Pirates 30-3. While a Week 1 victory is always a positive start, Michigan football coach Jesse Minter, who assumed the role of acting head coach in place of the suspended Jim Harbaugh, aims to make some adjustments as they head into Week 2 of the season.

Michigan football coach Jesse Minter talks Week 2 adjustments

Next weekend, at 3:30 PM (EST), Michigan football will host UNLV for a Week 2 matchup at the Big House. The Wolverines began their season on the right note, coming close to achieving a shutout if it weren’t for a last-second field goal, which was kicked solely to put points on the board.

Michigan football coach Jesse Minter had his first opportunity as a head coach yesterday due to Jim Harbaugh’s suspension. While Harbaugh won’t return until Week 4, other assistants will take turns in the head coach role for the next two weeks. Nonetheless, the second-year defensive coordinator is eager to make some adjustments as they head into Week 2 of the season, which he outlined after the game.

“I think, starting with the defense, just continuing to get after the quarterback,” Michigan football coach Jesse Minter said after his 30-3 win over East Carolina. “They weren’t going to allow us to pin our ears back and rush with how fast they were getting rid of the ball — the threat of the draws and the runs with the quarterback that was in there. So just continue to work our pass rush. I thought we had some really good rushes. I think it’ll show on tape.”

With Jim Harbaugh back at practice, the Wolverines are looking to improve

The Michigan football defense has prided itself on the pass rush for quite some time; however, yesterday, the edge rushers and defensive line struggled to get to the quarterback. According to Jesse Minter, that is going to be a point of emphasis this week. Additionally, the run game was not really working, and there were a few missed assignments along the offensive line throughout the game.

“I know those guys were a little frustrated (about) not coming home with any sacks,” Minter said. “And then offensively, I think just the rhythm of run and pass, being able to move people when you know that they’re trying to stop the run. So I’m confident and a lot of improvements being made in those areas from week one to week two.”

When UNLV comes to town, expect Michigan football to continue shaking off the rust and getting back into mid-season form.
