Despite having a number of coaches — including head coach Jim Harbaugh and offensive play-caller Sherrone Moore — suspended this weekend, Michigan football coach Jesse Minter (interim) is clearly feeling good about his staff. Minter, the team’s second-year defensive coordinator, has never called a game as a head coach for the Wolverines, but that did not stop him from exuding confidence about what he and his fellow coaches can do during the home opener.

Jesse Minter has only seen one season of action with Michigan football to this point. That said, Minter is as confident as ever that he and the coaches around him will step up in a big way. With Sherrone Moore gone, Kirk Campbell will be calling offensive plays this weekend, perhaps giving junior quarterback JJ McCarthy more opportunities to shine.

To kind of echo what coach (Jim Harbaugh) said, very confident in our offensive staff,” Jesse Minter explained on Monday. “One thing, I think the way Sherrone Moore operates, he’s one of the best I’ve been around, but he’s such a good leader, and he brings people in, so it’s not like a one-man show. He’s very collaborative in how he approaches the offense, and so (I’m) confident that he’ll, number one, work really, really hard this week. I know the feeling probably that he’s having. And so he’s going to have a great plan for our offense and super high confidence in Kirk (Campbell) and the rest of the offensive staff to execute the plan come Saturday.”

Come Saturday, it’s expected that JJ McCarthy is going to get to sling it around a bit more; this was already the expectation, but with Campbell calling plays, it is almost certain that the Wolverines’ offense will look a bit more modern.

Adapting without Jim Harbaugh, Sherrone Moore

Jesse Minter has been a sideline coach, not a press box coach, during his tenure as the Wolverines’ DC. Because of this interactive experience on the sideline, he believes that the transition into being a head coach will be easier this weekend.

“I think that’s certainly going to be helpful here,” Minter said. “I think myself particularly — just being the coordinator, not having a position — in between series, I’ll often quickly talk to the coaches, ‘Hey, let’s get this cleaned up. Let’s maybe tweak this, let’s change this.’ Now to be able to do that and also be able to have a real focus on the game going on with our offense and being able to kind of be dialed in with what they’re doing, I anticipate that hopefully going pretty smooth.”

Michigan football coach Jesse Minter is confident in his staff’s ability to adapt this weekend, and so should the fans.
