Over the offseason, the Wolverines lost a pair of incredible tight ends — Luke Schoonmaker and Erick All. That said, the Maize and Blue still have the best tight end room in the Big Ten conference, with both Colston Loveland and transfer portal addition AJ Barner coming in and making a splash. According to Sherrone Moore, the Michigan football coaching staff has been quite impressed with Barner thus far as the 2023 season draws near.

At the beginning of next month, Michigan football will kick off a new season against East Carolina at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor, MI. According to Sherrone Moore, who is heading into his first year as the Wolverines’ solo offensive play-caller, the Michigan football coaching staff is loving what they’re seeing from transfer portal addition AJ Barner, who is coming into the program with a massive frame and plenty of Big Ten experience.

“He’s been outstanding,” Sherrone Moore said of AJ Barner. “First of all, he’s huge — a giant human being, phenomenal kid, phenomenal person, does everything right.”

A breakout season could be coming for this massive Wolverine

With JJ McCarthy heading into his junior year, an elite running back room, and so much more, both AJ Barner and Colston Loveland are going to be asked to block and catch plenty of times this year. According to Moore, Michigan football is in good hands when it comes to this elite tight end duo, especially since Barner has proven that he can be a difference-maker in the Big Ten conference.

“He’s been outstanding because when you’re on edge, and you’re blocking Jaylen Harrell and Kris Jenkins and all those other guys, whoever’s out there — when you can hold up, it’s pretty impressive,” Sherrone Moore continued. “And then in the passing game, he’s so big, so fluent and so agile, he gives you another threat in the passing game that you can’t say, ‘oh yeah, he’s in the game, you’re gonna run the ball.’ So he’s been extremely valuable. It’s gonna allow multiple things with them, so very excited about that.”

If you are a fan of Jim Harbaugh’s offensive style, which has brought two Big Ten titles and counting back to Ann Arbor so far, you’re going to love watching new transfer portal tight end AJ Barner this fall.
