Michigan Football ‘Confident’ in Punter Tommy Doman

It’s been a season of regression so far for Doman

Michigan punter Tommy Doman (19) punts the ball against USC during the second half at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor on Saturday, Sept. 21, 2024.

Michigan football has had to punt much more this season as a result of a less productive offense. Senior punter Tommy Doman averaged nearly 45 yards per punt throughout the national championship run, but that number is down to 41.1 this year. Over the last three weeks, Doman didn’t average more than 37 yards per punt once.

Confidence is Key

Michigan special teams coordinator J.B. Brown said that nobody has given up on Doman.

“Confidence is in him, really,” Brown said. “I think he works hard. He takes his craft very seriously at the end of the day. We have full faith in him as a program. Everyone on the team has faith in him. The way he works and prepares, there’s no reason why he won’t perform well.”

If Michigan wants to change the narrative on its season, beating No. 1 Oregon this weekend could do that in a heartbeat. Even the top team in the country could have a tough time scoring if they’re constantly deep in their own territory.

Brown said Doman just needs to put it together on a Saturday.

“(We’re) continuing to try to change the rhythm up at practice,” Brown said. “Him and Hudson (Hollenbeck) are competing at practice every day, doing a good job. He’s practicing extremely well at a high level (and) we just need to translate it from State Street to Main Street now.

“And I think he’ll do that here soon.”

As far as possible technical reasons for Doman’s down season, Brown said they’re working on it.

“We just need to get his feet underneath him, his hips underneath him and be able to just get the ball out a little bit more,” Brown said. “We’ve been trying to change our practice to get some of that and change his rhythm up a little bit to do a little bit more of those things during practice. He had an extremely great day yesterday. Just looking forward to what he does this week.”
