Michigan football fans have been following a roller coaster news story of Jim Harbaugh’s suspension. After a little back and forth regarding his punishment decision, the University of Michigan finally stepped in and placed a three-game suspension on coach Harbaugh to start the 2023 season. Since then, fans have been speculating whether Michigan would hand control over to offensive coordinator Sherrone Moore, defensive coordinator Jesse Minter, or someone else in the organization entirely. As it turns out, multiple coaches will get a chance to run the show this September.

Jesse Minter, Jay Harbaugh, Mike Hart, and Sherrone Moore are named Michigan football interim head coaches

Michigan football has decided to split head coaching duties for the first three games among four of their top coaches and coordinators. Here is the complete schedule for the interim head coaches for the start of the season.

  • Jesse Minter, Defensive Coordinator — East Carolina (Sept. 2)
  • Jay Harbaugh, Special Teams Coordinator/Safeties Coach — UNLV First Half (Sept. 9)
  • Mike Hart, Run Game Coordinator/Running Backs Coach — UNLV Second Half (Sept. 9)
  • Sherrone Moore, Offensive Coordinator/Offensive Line Coach — Bowling Green (Sept. 16)

Jim Harbaugh made it clear that the Michigan football coaching room holds lots of depth and numerous coaches within the program could have carried out the head coaching duties at a high level. Here is the complete statement Harbaugh released earlier today.

“I’m certain that all will be impressed with the four coaches’ ability to direct and manage the game. It’s been well documented that we have a very talented coaching staff and I believe that all 10 assistant coaches will be head coaches in the near future. They are all capable of leading a team at an elite level. I know that everyone will handle their responsibilities and help our players to be the best version of themselves on and off the field this fall and beyond.”
