Michigan football is 6-0 right now, coming off of back-to-back Big Ten titles and CFP appearances over the past two seasons. Still, despite all of the success that the Wolverines have seen lately, 9th-year head coach Jim Harbaugh is not among the top-paid coaches in college football, nor is he a top-paid coach in the conference. That said, with a lot of talk of a new contract coming soon, John U. Bacon reported today that a new massive contract could be in the works.

Michigan football likely to offer Jim Harbaugh massive new contract soon

According to famed Michigan football author John U. Bacon, who is known for his incredible books on the Wolverines and his reporting on the program over the years, a new contract is in the works. Today, Bacon reported (via Twitter/X) that Michigan is working on a new contract — which should be ready to go within the next month — that will make Jim Harbaugh the top-paid coach in the Big Ten Conference.

“I just received this from two high-ranking UM officials: ‘The Regents, Warde Manuel, and President Ono are all in alignment that Jim (Harbaugh) should have an extension within the next month that makes him the highest-paid coach in the conference.’ That should settle that,” Bacon said.

Michigan needs to make its head coach feel at home

Earlier today, Jim Harbaugh explained at his weekly presser that he wants to be somewhere where he feels wanted — he added that he does, in fact, feel wanted in Ann Arbor.

He didn’t give much in regards to relationships with Warde Manuel or his future, but it’s clear that the money and terms need to match Harbaugh’s level of success. In other words, Michigan football needs to make it clear that the program and school appreciate Harbaugh’s body of work since getting to Ann Arbor, especially over the past few seasons.

For now, it’s time to sit tight and wait for the school to make the first move at the negotiating table.
