The production from the quarterback position has been less than impressive for Michigan football in 2024.

Whether it’s been senior Davis Warren or junior Alex Orji, both starters struggled mightily passing the ball, combining for 562 passing yards and five passing touchdowns to six interceptions. Through five weeks, that’s an average of 112 passing yards per game.

In a press conference on Wednesday, Michigan offensive coordinator Kirk Campbell discussed potential additions to U-M’s quarterback competition.

Will Michigan Football Make Another Change at QB?

Senior quarterback Jack Tuttle had offseason surgery, but there’s reason to believe he’s almost healthy enough to be in the mix.

“I’m not going to fully disclose on injuries, but Jack is progressing in a very, very good manner, and he’s getting some reps here and there,” Campbell said.

Freshman quarterback Jadyn Davis was ranked as a top-10 signal caller coming out of high school on 247Sports. Davis won Mr. Football in North Carolina behind a stat line of 3,370 passing yards, 43 touchdowns and nine interceptions, while completing over 70% of his passes.

Campbell said it might be too soon to put Davis on the field on a Saturday.

“As far as an option this season, we don’t know how this season is going to play out, but we constantly develop him every single day,” Campbell said. “He’s getting reps, just like the other guys, and he’s got to continue to develop.”

Campbell said he wants to be careful with the top prospect.

“Nowadays with social media and everything, everyone’s on this instant gratification of a freshman coming in and playing,” Campbell said. “ I think (Minnesota Vikings coach) Kevin O’Connell said it best, right? Organizations fail young quarterbacks, not young quarterbacks failing. You’ve got to make sure he’s developed properly and ready for the situation.”

“He’s going to have a bright future at the University of Michigan,” Campbell said. “Whether that’s as fast as the outside perceived media expectation is, that’s not for us to make a rash decision based on that. We’re going to put him in a situation where he’s ready to go play.”

What’s Next for the Michigan Starting QB Role?

When switching from Warren to Orji midseason, the coaching staff had its hand forced following Warren’s six interceptions in three games.

While the Wolverines have squeaked by Minnesota & USC despite Orji’s struggles, the new starter is likely a loss away from losing his job again or at least opening the door for a healthy Tuttle to get a shot.

Regardless, Michigan football fans are left with more questions than answers.
