Now that the spring transfer portal window has closed, Michigan football can stop focusing on player retention, and start focusing on re-tooling the roster.
The Wolverines don’t have many needs. They have a team right now that’s capable of competing for a Big Ten championship. Yet, there is a lot that needs to go right. As Michigan football proved last season, depth is vital to a championship run.
Heck, the Wolverines learned the lesson in 2022 when it lost Blake Corum, its best player, for the most important games of the season. Having quality got Michgan through it.
That will be the objective for the Wolverines in the transfer portal. They have been projected to land Amorion Walker, who has re-entered the portal from Ole Miss, as well as former Youngstown State wideout C.J. Charleston.
Yet, Michigan football has shown interest in one defensive tackle — CJ West — and on Wednesday, the Wolverines offered another D-lineman, Jay’viar Suggs.
Another transfer portal target for Michigan football
Suggs is a 6-foot-3, 282-pound defensive lineman from Grand Valley State. He’s from Clarkston, Michigan, and has entered the portal as a graduate transfer with two years of eligibility.
The Michigan native had 21 tackles, 7.5 tackles for loss, five sacks, and a forced fumble last season. He’s also received 37 offers so far since entering the portal. Florida State is expected to host him for a visit this weekend, which comes on the heels of a trip to Arkansas.
Kentucky is also expecting to get an official visit. But since he’s an in-state kid, you’d have to think Michigan football would be in contention for a visit too. Kenneth Grant, Mason Graham, and Rayshaun Benny are all back and that should limit some of the snaps, but looking at last season, there would be plenty to go around.
All four guys could stay fresh and adding Suggs would make it the best D-line room in the country. It probably is already, as long as the depth holds up.
