Michigan football offers transfer portal defensive tackle

The transfer portal opened on Tuesday and while much of the focus from a Michigan football perspective is on who could potentially leave, the Wolverines are looking to add to their roster.

We talked about some of the potential areas of need earlier this week. Quarterback and wide receiver are somewhat obvious. However, the Wolverines also need defensive depth. Michigan football was elite in terms of its depth last season. It’s also been a key factor for Georgia and Alabama in recent national championships.

If you want to win, you need depth. Michigan knows that as well as anyone and that’s why it’s not surprising to see the Wolverines offer a defensive tackle.

CJ West, a 6-foot-2, 330-pound defensive tackle from Kent State reported an offer from Michigan. He’s played the past three seasons and redshirted during 2020. He might be able to play for two seasons, but most likely, he will have one more year and be a graduate transfer.

What CJ West could bring to Michigan football

That helps with admissions. West notched 110 tackles during the past three seasons for the Golden Flashes. He was also credited with 19.5 tackles for loss and seven sacks. That’s impressive production for a 330-pound dude.

West could have a valuable role for the Wolverines too. Mason Graham and Kenneth Grant are well-known. Rayshaun Benny is damn good too. But you need more than three quality defensive tackles. The Wolverines could have more ready to break out but good interior pass rushers are rare. West is that and he’s a guy who could provide some valuable depth for the defending national champions.
