HOUSTON — In just a few days, JJ McCarthy will lead his Wolverines into battle against the Washington Huskies in the program’s first-ever National Championship Game. On Saturday, we heard from QB coach Kirk Campbell and others on a number of potential future Michigan football quarterback choices, including sophomore star Alex Orji, who has been turning heads and causing some major buzz over the past few months.
Michigan football quarterback Alex Orji earning some high praise
When we were in LA for the Rose Bowl, I had a chance to speak with Jim Harbaugh about Michigan football quarterback Alex Orji, a sophomore, whom Harbaugh compared to Alabama standout Jalen Milroe. Of course, Orji is far less polished, but he could be a major weapon for the Maize and Blue down the line if these comparisons pan out.
On Saturday, Michigan football quarterback coach Kirk Campbell gave the latest on his QB room, including an update for Alex Orji, a sophomore athlete for the Wolverines who is said to be a major athletic freak.
“Obviously what the fans have seen is him run it a lot, but his throwing is what’s the most impressive and the most production,” Campbell said. “His footwork, his fundamentals, getting everything tied to his throw — his timing is where the real development has happened. And he has an extremely bright future if he keeps trending in that direction.”
More from Kirk Campbell
When asked about how his QBs have been developing, Kirk Campbell added more on Orji.
“Alex Orji, his fundamentals, footwork, timing is insane in his development,” he said.
A fan and player favorite
It’s also worth noting that Mason Graham, a superstar defensive tackle for Michigan football, is also a big Alex Orji fan.
“Probably one of the Alex Orji runs,” he said when asked about his favorite play of the 2023 season.
On Monday, Michigan football and JJ McCarthy will play for a national title; however, with McCarthy potentially entering the NFL Draft, look for Alex Orji to make a splash in the coming offseason. On the other hand, we posted about some major hype for sophomore quarterback Jayden Denegal earlier today, so keep an eye on him as well.
