For the third year in a row, Michigan football has spent the majority of the season ranked behind Ohio State, only to assert their dominance in the final week of the regular season. Following last week’s win, Michigan now holds the No. 2 ranking which OSU once held. The Wolverines are now one win away from securing a third straight playoff appearance.

Michigan football receives No. 2 overall ranking in latest CFP poll

This year’s Michigan football team has certainly earned their ranking in the latest CFP poll. Despite Jim Harbaugh’s multiple suspensions and numerous controversies surrounding the program, the Wolverines found a way to quiet the outside noise and go undefeated in the regular season yet again. Michigan wraps up the regular season with the No. 2 ranking in the CFP poll, only bested by the 12-0 Georgia Bulldogs.

Following up Michigan in the other two playoff spots currently are No. 3 Washington and No. 4 Florida State. While Georgia, Michigan, Washington, and Florida State currently make up the top four, a lot could happen next week with numerous conference championships yet to be played.

Still on the bubble to make the playoffs are No. 5 Oregon (11-1, 8-1 Pac-12), No. 7 Texas (11-1, 8-1 Big-12), and No. 8 Alabama (11-1, 8-0 SEC), who will all be playing for conference championships next week.

Ohio State ranked No. 6 after loss to Michigan

After Ohio State’s third straight loss to Michigan, it was thought that the Buckeyes’ playoff chances would become miniscule. With Ohio State no longer in contention for a Big Ten title, it seemed near impossible for the Buckeyes to still make the playoffs with such good competition this year.

However, the Buckeyes finished No. 6 overall in the rankings this week, ahead of contenders like Texas and Alabama. While it still seems unlikely that Ohio State could move up after this week, stranger things have happened.

Michigan football will head to Indianapolis this weekend in hopes of punching their ticket to a third straight playoff appearance. Kickoff is set for 8 PM ET this December 2nd.
