This Michigan football star wants to do even more for the Wolverines than what he has thus far.

Every college football player shares one common goal for their career — to make it into the NFL Draft and have a successful professional career. Don’t get me wrong, most college players absolutely love their school and program, but every single one sees college as a gateway to the next level, or at least that is the goal. For Michigan football star Donovan Edwards, who stood out as a sophomore and is seen as one of the best players in the sport right now, he is looking for a more versatile and explosive role this year before eying his NFL Draft prospects down the road.

Donovan Edwards looking to raise NFL Draft stock and more

Now, before saying anything else, when I say Donovan Edwards is looking at the NFL Draft, I am not saying that he is leaving after the coming season. Maybe he will, maybe he won’t, but regardless, he has been very open (and rightfully so) that he wants to reach the next level at some point.

Michigan football star Donovan Edwards is more than your typical elite running back — he can block, run, catch, and more. In fact, according to him, he could even kick and play defense if that is what the coaching staff wanted from him. Still, heading into the 2023 season, there has been a ton of buzz about Edwards stepping into a more versatile role — one where he can be a threat as a ball carrier and as a receiver.

A bigger role for the Michigan football star?

On Friday, at Schembechler Hall, Michigan football star Donovan Edwards addressed the media, going in-depth on wanting a more versatile role for the Wolverines this season.

“Yes sir, absolutely,” Edwards said. “Same thing with Bijan Robinson, too, he has fantastic hands as well. I said in the PFF interview that that’s what the NFL is looking for, like a Christian McCaffrey type, Jahmyr Gibbs type. I believe that I fit that description perfectly. You know, there’s not many flaws in my game. I’m very confident about that. If I’m able to produce in the receiving game, then I feel like that will help build my draft stock because that’s what the NFL is looking for — running backs who can run, catch, pass block, and what they can do after they have the ball as well.”

Additionally, Donovan Edwards added that playing out wide could add something that all Michigan football fans would love to see: him and Blake Corum on the field at the same time. With Edwards in the slot and Corum in the backfield — not to mention JJ McCarthy, a duo of elite tight ends, and more threats on the field — picking what to defend would be a nightmare for opposing defenses.
