Jim Harbaugh and his coaching staff are not being too active when it comes to the transfer portal right now, largely because they are focused solely on beating Alabama in the Rose Bowl on January 1, 2024. That said, the Maize and Blue know that there could be some roster turnover, and a major Michigan football transfer portal target has emerged as of late: former five-star UCLA quarterback Dante Moore, a sophomore native of MI. Today, a new report states that U-M is already in talks with the former No. 1 recruit in the state of Michigan, showing that he could become JJ McCarthy’s successor in 2024.
Report says Michigan football transfer portal target in talks with U-M coaching staff
Dante Moore had a rough year with the UCLA Bruins, though there are a number of contributing factors that went into that, and it appears that the Michigan football coaching staff still feels good about what he could do in the Wolverines’ offense. Per Pete Nakos of On3, Dante Moore and Michigan are in talks right now, meaning things could be heating up in the search for the Wolverines’ next QB1.
“According to the source, Moore and Michigan have been in touch since he entered the portal around 8:30 p.m. ET on Monday night,” the report reads. “A timetable for a decision has not been established, but the Wolverines would check off several boxes he’s looking for.”
Dante Moore was a major miss, but could return via the portal if JJ McCarthy decides to leave
As a high school recruit, Dante Moore was a five-star prospect and ranked as the No. 3 player nationally, the No. 2 quarterback in the 2023 class, and the No. 1 player in the state of Michigan. At the time of his recruitment, it appeared that Moore had a lot of interest in Michigan football, though ultimately, he picked Oregon… and then UCLA.
Still, seeing as Michigan could need a new QB — assuming JJ McCarthy leaves for the 2024 NFL Draft — it sounds like Jim Harbaugh may have some interest in making Dante Moore his new QB1.
