We are now halfway through Michigan football vs. Bowling Green — the Wolverines’ Week 3 matchup and their final non-conference game before beginning the team’s nine-game Big Ten slate next weekend against Rutgers. With the Wolverines currently leading 14-6 with two quarters remaining, here are three halftime takeaways.

Overall, that was the worst half of football that Michigan has played in quite some time.

3 halftime takeaways for Michigan football vs. Bowling Green

1. Get the mistakes out now

Michigan football has made its fair share of mistakes this evening. From JJ McCarthy’s first interception of the season to a kick return fumble from Max Bredeson, the Wolverines are not playing as many had hoped heading into the game. Michigan football needs to get the mistakes out now before Big Ten play starts; there have been plenty of missed opportunities from Bowling Green — such as a dropped touchdown and more — that Power 5 schools will capitalize on.

Michigan football had three first-half turnovers against Bowling Green (almost four, but the Wolverines recovered their own kickoff fumble). There were also blown coverages, sacks, and more.

2. Tyler Morris should be the Wolverines’ full-time return man

Michigan football has yet to name a full-time kick and punt returner; however, the Maize and Blue seem to have a fantastic candidate in Tyler Morris. So far today, Morris has returned 1 punt for 22 yards — he has looked the best of anyone to get a shot thus far. Earlier this week, Morris explained that he would love to get the job — he just wants to see more reps with the ball in his hands.

3. The defense has been up and down so far

Today’s Michigan football injury report was not the best for the Wolverines’ defense. Rod Moore and Amorion Walker are still out, while Will Johnson and Makari Paige — among others — remained questionable against Bowling Green. The Falcons clearly took note as they connected on a few deep balls; however, overall, the defense looked solid. There were mistakes here and there, many of which can be pinned on the depth being tested tonight, yet Michigan football still held Bowling Green to 6 points in the first half despite the Wolverines having three turnovers.
