In just five days, Michigan football will kick off its 2023 season against East Carolina at the Big House in Ann Arbor; however, this year’s opener will look quite different from previous seasons. Jim Harbaugh has been suspended for the first three games of the season, and in his place, four interim head coaches will look to guide the Wolverines to a perfect record before beginning Big Ten conference play. Earlier today, Harbaugh explained the reasoning behind appointing Sherrone Moore, Jesse Minter, and other interim coaches for the first three games.

Why did Jim Harbaugh name four interim coaches for the 2023 season?

Ahead of the first Michigan football game of 2023, head coach Jim Harbaugh had the opportunity to address the media. During the press conference, Harbaugh explained why he named four interim head coaches for the Wolverines’ non-conference games. Normally, only one interim head coach is appointed for all the games that a full-time head coach will miss.

“I know how good they are,” Jim Harbaugh said when asked why he named a series of interim head coaches for the 2023 season. “As I said, all 10 coaches, I believe, are tremendous and talented, and I think it’s what’s best for our team. They’re gonna be able — a tremendous opportunity for each one of them to have the experience of managing the game. We’re gonna have Jesse (Minter) come up in a few moments and talk about that, and I think you’ll be more than satisfied and well document how good our coaches are for that reason.”

Michigan football set to rotate coaches for the first 3 weeks of the season

While Michigan football has a lot of good options, why is Jim Harbaugh rotating them game-by-game?

“Also the, ‘Why one each game?’ Because I know each time with coaches — the head coach — I know what their preparation is going to be the fullest, at the max, and that’s going to be the best thing for our football team. When you’re the head coach during a game, you’re the Guardian of Victory. That’s a tremendous responsibility, and you understand complementing people.  It’s not just defense, it’s not just offense, it’s not just special teams, it’s the whole team. And I know they’re gonna be great at it.”

Jesse Minter is set to kick things off for Michigan football against East Carolina this year. Mike Hart and Jay Harbaugh will handle game two (vs. UNLV), and Sherrone Moore will take charge in game three (Bowling Green). It’s worth noting that Jim Harbaugh will return in Week 4 of the upcoming season (vs. Rutgers), and Sherrone Moore, who is suspended for one game in the 2023 season, will resume his role as the offensive play-caller for the Wolverines’ matchup against UNLV (Week 2).
