Michigan football’s biggest question is still quarterback

According to reports from practice, the biggest concern for Michigan football going forward is still the quarterback position.

There have been plenty of reports coming out about Michigan football spring practices and they all tend to have one thing in common: praise for the defense.

Some have called it “special.” Others have used the word “elite” but whatever adjective fits best, the Michigan football defense isn’t going to drop off. Unless rival schools are successful in stealing away some of the best players, the Wolverines’ defense should be as good as any in college football next season.

The offense needs work though, according to a report from Chris Balas of The Wolverine. Balas quotes some practice observers who say that the QB, or lack of one, is still the biggest issue.

QB is still the big question mark

Of course, most college football quarterbacks would struggle against the Michigan football defense. So take those comments with a grain of salt. But Balas believes the Wolverines will be looking for a quarterback in the spring transfer portal window.

That’s never really been up for debate. I always thought Michigan would try to add a quarterback, but it has to be the right fit and it has to be an upgrade. I’m not convinced the Wolverines will find that in the portal because right now, there isn’t a clear upgrade available.

Balas reports there is hope that Jake Tuttle can be a “spark” when he gets healthy. He did play well in limited reps last season. I could see a combination of Tuttle and Alex Orji getting most of the snaps next fall. Orji has been impressive this spring and has all the tools. He just needs to be more consistent.

With the current pieces, even if it’s Orji at quarterback, I think the Wolverines can push for a playoff spot. But with a truly elite defense — if Michigan football could somehow find a Jake Rudock type or better, another playoff run might not be off the table.
