Michigan football is in a unique spot as this season comes to a close. Although the first two and a half months were rather disappointing, the Wolverines have picked up a hefty amount of momentum as of late.
With wins over Michigan State and Ohio State to go along with a top ten recruiting class, the maize and blue are poised to do damage in the transfer portal. The portal opens next week, and Michigan could use some additions at certain positions.
What Michigan Needs in the Transfer Portal
Over the weekend, Steve Wiltfong of On3 predicted ($) Michigan to land former Indiana WR Donoven McCulley. McCulley reportedly visited Ann Arbor on Sunday.
“Great program, great facilities,” McCulley said. “I love Coach (Sherrone) Moore and I really like the program.
“And I know they’re not going to have another down year.”
McCulley led the Hoosiers in receptions (48), yards (644), and touchdowns (6) in 2023.
Michigan could also have its eyes on a few other receivers in the portal. Kevin Concepcion (NC State), Eric Rivers (FIU), Micah Hudson (Texas Tech) and Malachi Coleman (Nebraska) are other names to look out for. Michigan offered both Hudson and Coleman out of high school.
The wide receiver position is likely the focus as the team severely lacked in production in the passing game this season. With the highest rated recruit in the history of the program set to play QB next season, one would imagine it’s a priority to surround him with the right talent. The current receiver room is almost exclusively filled with smaller-framed players, so size will be an important factor.
For depth, Michigan could look at running backs, cornerbacks and safeties in the portal as well.
