No. 13 Michigan ice hockey (16-12-2, 10-9-1 Big Ten) came out of its final series with No. 2 Michigan State with one win and one loss. The Wolverines took the first game on Friday in East Lansing, 2-1. The second was played at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit on Saturday in the “Duel in the D”, wherein the Spartans (22-5-3, 13-4-3 Big Ten) came out on top 6-1.
Michigan ice hockey falls to MSU at Duel in the D
In game one, the Spartans jumped out to a 1-0 lead midway through the first period with a power-play goal from Karsen Dorwart. The Wolverines tied it just a few minutes later with an advantage-goal of their own by T.J. Hughes, assisted by Ethan Edwards and Michael Hage.
The game remained tied 1-1 until left winger Garrett Schifsky tipped in a blue-line wrist shot by Edwards for the go-ahead goal with under a minute to play. Michigan goalie Cameron Korpi finished with 38 saves, including 20 in the second period.
The Duel in the D went a bit differently. The Spartans once again got out to a 1-0 first period lead, and the Wolverines were able to tie it up in the second with a goal from Tyler Duke. From that point on, MSU scored five unanswered goals to run away with it.
It marked Michigan’s largest loss in terms of goal differential since losing to Minnesota 6-0 on Dec. 6. The maize and blue have a chance at redemption as it hosts the third-ranked Golden Gophers next on Feb. 14 and 15.
