One of the top recruits in the country is staying home. 2025 five-star combo guard Trey McKenney (Orchard Lake St. Mary’s, Orchard Lake, MI) committed to Michigan on Saturday. The Flint native chose the Wolverines over Georgetown and USC. McKenney had a visit to Georgetown planned for early December, but he ultimately didn’t need it.

McKenney is nationally ranked in the top seven at his position on every recruiting platform. In September McKenney said he could tell Michigan head coach Dusty May was building something special.

“Oh, I feel like (Dusty May) is building a pretty good program, and his players are buying in, and it’s the hometown school, so that’s a good feeling,” McKenney said.

Trey McKenney Commits to Michigan: What It Means

The 6-foot-4, 225 pound guard could have an immediate impact as a freshman next season. McKenney is a relentless scorer that can put the ball in the hoop from anywhere on the floor. He has endless moves in his bag, and his offensive game is paired with an equally aggressive defensive game. McKenney averaged over 20 points and 10 rebounds as a junior en route to a MHSAA Division I state title.

McKenney would give the Michigan lineup flexibility as a guard that can play and defend at least three positions. He will likely be the cornerstone of the program, and his commitment could make Michigan more enticing for recruits in the future.

In less than a full year as head coach, May has Michigan headed towards the top.
