Michigan Softball saw their season come to a close in the Austin Regional of the Women’s College World Series. After their win against UCF in game one, Michigan fell to No. 6 Texas, and then lost in a double elimination against a vengeful UCF team.

Michigan was down 3-1 against UCF in game one, but Jenissa Conway’s double RBI and Lauren Putz’s homerun in the sixth put the Wolverines up 4-3, heading into a scoreless seventh inning to secure the win. Michigan was on a seven-game win streak heading into game three of the regional against host team Texas.

The sixth-seeded Longhorns snuffed out the Wolverines’ win-streak in a big way, devastating the Wolverines 16-4 in just five innings. Michigan was set to face UCF once again for both teams’ fate in the tournament, but the Knights were coming off of a stunning 10-2 victory over Eastern Illinois. That momentum, paired with their lingering vengeance after losing to Michigan in game one, allowed UCF to pull ahead, and defeat the Wolverines 10-8, ending their Big Ten Championship-winning season.

Though their run in the Women’s College World Series was cut much shorter than the Wolverines were hoping for, this was certainly a very successful season. As the Cinderella story of the Big Ten tournament, the Wolverines won it all as only the second No. 8 seed in conference tournament history.

Though Michigan will be losing senior second baseman, Ella McVey, and their starting pitcher, Lauren Derkowski, they will be welcoming back most of their star-studded roster for the 2026 season. The future of the Bonnie Tholl era for the back-to-back conference tournament champions remains bright as ever.
