Michigan softball is gearing up for the Big Ten tournament next week, with one series left in the regular season against Minnesota. Head coach Bonnie Tholl’s squad hopes to end the regular season on a high note, especially coming off a three game losing streak after two particularly rough 0-3 series losses to UCLA and Ohio State.

The Wolverines stand with a 32-18 record going into the Minnesota series, with a 9-10 record in conference. The Big Ten has proven especially difficult for Tholl’s Wolverines, with nationally-ranked powerhouse opponents #6 Oregon, #7 UCLA, and #24 Ohio state leading the conference. Michigan fell to each of those teams in all three games of their respective series, but they did play them close. Most notably, the Wolverines kept Oregon’s lead to just one run in two of the three games in their series.

The Wolverines won’t go down on this season without a fight

Despite recent disappointments, the Michigan softball squad remains strong-willed and resilient. They certainly have some notable achievements on the season, not the least of which being Jenissa Conway named as Big Ten Player of the Week after her electrifying performance against in-state rivals Michigan State.

Though it did not end favorably, the third game in the UCLA series showed some promise going forward as well, with freshman Lauren Putz as the designated hitter going 3-for-4 at the plate as the designated hitter and pulling in three RBIs. Ultimately, the Wolverines were just outmatched against the UCLA Bruins, but they played tough until the end, exemplifying their grit and resilience as a team.

Despite a losing conference record going into the final series of the regular season, the Michigan Wolverines have quite a bit to be proud of on this season. With many key players returning next season, including Conway and Putz, and three more games left of the regular season this year, the Wolverines are surely fired up, with plenty of work still to be done.
