The academic year came to a close with the University of Michigan’s commencement ceremony on May 3rd, and with it, the regular seasons of most NCAA spring sports. With the academic and sports calendars both coming to a close, Michigan athletics have accomplished some incredible feats, not the least of which being a near sweep against rivals Ohio State in the most recent matchups in each of the four major men’s sports.

Michigan baseball recently swept Ohio State in their three game series, closing out the academic and athletic year on a high note, with final scores of 23-1, 11-4, and 13-3. Michigan men’s hockey, though they did not sweep the Buckeyes on the season, they did close out the season with a 4-3 win in Columbus. Michigan’s basketball and football teams each only met the Buckeyes once this season, but both games were set in Columbus with the Wolverines coming out on top.

The 2024-2025 Athletic Calendar Was a Historic One For Michigan

Michigan football was struggling towards the end of the regular season, without a consistent quarterback and down 6-5 on the season. Against a 10-1 Ohio State team in Columbus, no one thought the Wolverines stood a chance, but in his first full season as head coach, Sherrone Moore led his team down to Ohio and pulled off the upset for Michigan’s fourth straight win against the Buckeyes.

Also in his first year at Michigan, basketball head coach Dusty May also took his squad down to Columbus to defeat the Buckeyes 86-83 on their home court. Before their Big Ten and NCAA tournament wins, the men’s gymnastics squad also defeated Ohio State in their meet, joining the list of Wolverine squads who went undefeated against the Buckeyes this season. Also topping that list are the women’s field hockey, women’s gymnastics, and women’s lacrosse teams.

The University of Michigan Athletics department certainly had a lot to be proud of this year, but as sweet as those achievements are, they are all made even sweeter knowing that the Wolverines truly dominated the Buckeyes across the board this season.
