After a historic run in the NCAA tournament, the Michigan women’s tennis team’s season came to a close after a loss to No. 2 Texas A&M in the final four. The Wolverines end the season as the Big Ten regular season champions with a 27-5 record, the second-most wins in program history, and tying their record for the highest NCAA tournament seed at number three.
Texas A&M was the Wolverines’ greatest challenge yet, and the No. 2 seed came out on top, 4-1. Lily Jones and Jessica Bernales got their team off to a great start, taking court one in doubles action, but Michigan lost the momentum in courts two and three, resulting in the Aggies winning the doubles point. Freshman Emily Sartz-Lunde won her singles match, but the Wolverines ultimately couldn’t hold on, and Texas A&M won on courts two, three, and six to put the match away.
Ultimately, This Was the Wolverines’ Most Successful Season Yet
Though Michigan did not make it to the NCAA Tournament finals, they hit a whole slew of milestones this season, making program history in more ways than one. Head coach Ronni Bernstein brought Michigan to the NCAA Tournament semifinals for the first time ever, and they did so in fashion, shutting out all but one of their opponents 4-0.
Ending the season, and her college career, as the sixth-ranked singles player in the nation, Julia Fliegner closes out her time at Michigan on a definite high note. Fliegner was a true asset to the Wolverines, and ends her career with 113 singles wins, the fifth most in program history. While she will definitely leave a sizable hole in the roster upon her graduation, Fliegner is the only graduating senior this year, meaning there is absolutely potential for a back-to-back final four run next spring.
