The Michigan State football program had a brutal year in 2023. After starting 2-0, the Mel Tucker allegations emerged and they went just 2-8 the rest of the way. MSU fans were rewarded as they were able to watch Michigan football celebrate a national title.
While the fanbase expected to improve after hiring Jonathan Smith away from the Oregon State Beavers, Las Vegas does not like their chances of having a strong season. The Spartans are tied for the 80th-best odds, +9500, to reach the College Football Playoff.
Their odds are worse than three programs from the MAC Conference. The Miami (OH) RedHawks, Toledo Rockets and Northern Illinois Huskies have +2500, +3300, and +8000 odds, respectively, to reach the postseason.
Michigan State’s projected win total of 4.5 wins is tied for the lowest in the Big Ten. With four of their 12 opponents ranked in the preseason AP Top 25 Poll, it could be another long season for the Spartans.
Michigan’s Win Total & Postseason Odds are Much Higher than MSU
It is no secret that Michigan has a much better football program than the Spartans. The defending national champions have much better odds to reach the postseason. Additionally, their win total that is nearly twice as high as their intrastate rivals.
Michigan’s win total sits at 8.5 while their postseason odds are +150, the tenth-best in the entire nation. The Wolverines have better odds, +3000, of repeating as national champions than MSU has of reaching the College Football Playoff.
