The New England Patriots are no longer the cream of the crop in the NFL. Since legendary QB Tom Brady left, the Patriots have a record of 33-51. With a win over the Buffalo Bills on Sunday, New England knocked itself out of contention for the No. 1 overall pick in the upcoming NFL draft.

Rookie quarterback Drake Maye had a solid season, given his situation, and played just one series in the season finale. Fellow rookie signal-caller Joe Milton III took over and etched his place in Patriots history.

The former Wolverine likely wasn’t expected to turn any heads, as he was a sixth round pick (No. 193 overall). Milton completed 22-of-29 passes (75.8%) for 241 yards and a touchdown. He also added 16 yards and a score on the ground. He never turned the ball over and took zero sacks.

According to Patriots staff writer Evan Lazar, Milton registered the second-fastest throw speed in the NextGen era on Sunday. The Bills fielded mostly backups, but Milton showed he can be a viable QB2 in the NFL.

Patriots Chairman and CEO Robert Kraft announced that he fired head coach Jerod Mayo Sunday night. Heading into next season, it seems the quarterback position is one of the only areas New England is stable.
