Nightmare Michigan Football CFP Scenario Could Come True

After last nights SEC, ACC, and Big Ten title games, it looks like a nightmare Michigan Football CFP scenario could come true.

Finally, we’ve hit the end of the road toward a national title for all but four teams as College Football Playoff selection Sunday approaches. On Saturday, the Alabama Crimson Tide downed No. 1 Georgia in the SEC title game, which was fun to watch, especially since Jim Harbaugh and his team likely move to No. 1 following their Big Ten title win, though it sets up a potential nightmare Michigan football CFP scenario in the semi-final round.

Michigan football CFP seeding may not be favorable

On Sunday, the 2023-24 College Football Playoff rankings will be unveiled following the Wolverines’ Big Ten title game victory over No. 16 Iowa on Saturday evening. For Michigan, this year’s title is its third in a row — the first time that the Maize and Blue have won three straight outright conference championships in program history.

With No. 1 Georgia losing to Alabama in the SEC title game on Saturday afternoon, Michigan football likely jumps to No. 1 in the new CFP rankings — a move that could actually turn out to be pretty bad for the Wolverines.

Not to say that Michigan cannot play with whatever team its pitted against, but facing either the SEC Champion Alabama Crimson Tide or the SEC runner-up Georgia Bulldogs is not ideal.

Big Ten title game likely puts Jim Harbaugh and the Wolverines at No. 1, which may not be a good thing

Georgia lost, and who is the next team-up? Michigan football — which won the Big Ten title game 26-0 against No. 16 Iowa last night. That said, with Florida State looking horrible in the ACC title game (and missing a quarterback) and both Georgia and Alabama at 12-1 right now, it feels like either the Tide or the Bulldogs could reasonably slip into the playoff at No. 4.

Only time will tell once the new CFP rankings are released tomorrow, though it feels like Michigan football may both jump to No. 1 and draw the short straw of facing the SEC Champion.
