No. 10 Michigan ice hockey (13-8-1, 7-5 Big Ten) is coming off a two-game road set against Notre Dame in which it went 1-1 last weekend. The maize and blue have their biggest test of the season next as No. 1 Michigan State (18-2-2, 9-1-2 Big Ten) comes to Ann Arbor on Jan. 17 at 7 p.m. The teams will meet again for game two in East Lansing on Jan. 18 at 7:30 p.m.
Michigan ice hockey readies for series with Michigan State
The Wolverines haven’t won a series outright since they swept Penn State (6-5, 10-6) in late November. Michigan allowed 10 goals last weekend against Notre Dame, which is the second-most it has given up in a series this season (Penn State). The maize and blue are 7-3 at home this season, but just 4-6 in their last 10 games.
MSU has the leading point scorer in the country in junior forward Isaac Howard (33). The Spartans also have arguably the best goalie in the nation with sophomore Trey Augustine. Augustine, from South Lyon, Mich., was drafted 41st overall by the Detroit Red Wings in the 2023 NHL entry draft. With Augustine in net, the Spartans are 11-2-2.
Following this weekend, the in-state rivals will play one more series in February, with the first game set for East Lansing (Feb. 7) and the second set for Detroit (Duel in the D) the following day.
