No. 25 Michigan women’s basketball gives up fourth quarter lead in loss to No. 9 Ohio State

No. 25 Michigan women’s basketball (10-5, 1-3 Big Ten) held a lead for nearly 33 minutes of game time Wednesday night, but fell short 84-77 against No. 9 Ohio State (15-0, 4-0 Big Ten). It’s now three straight losses for the Wolverines, and it marked the first of the season on their home floor (9-1).

The Wolverines were up by 13 at halftime, but they came out of the locker room and scored 13 in the third quarter. Ohio State came into the game with a top 30 defense in terms of points per game, and it showed in the second half. Michigan shot 14-of-34 (41.2%) from the field and 1-of-11 (11.1%) from three over the final two quarters.

Freshman Buckeye guard Jaloni Cambridge scored 13 of her game-high 29 points in the fourth. Cambridge shot 11-of-23 from the field for the game, and she was especially lethal in the second half (8-of-12). The Wolverines allowed 31 points in the final quarter, which is the most they’ve allowed in a quarter all season. 

Michigan freshman guard Olivia Olson had a team-high 20 points on 8-of-12 shooting, including 3-of-4 from behind the arc. She also added four rebounds and two assists. Fellow freshman guard Syla Swords tallied 14 points, five rebounds and three assists. 

The Wolverines will have a chance to right the ship when they visit Purdue (7-8, 0-4 Big Ten) next on Jan. 11.
