Ohio State AD proposing asterisk for Michigan football wins is ‘weak sauce’

Ohio State AD Gene Smith was shredded for saying Michigan football needs an asterisk for its three-game winning streak over the Buckeyes.

Last week, the outgoing Ohio State athletic director made one final ploy to excuse the miserable three-year stretch to end his tenure, which included the Buckeyes losing the most important sporting event of the athletic department three years in a row to Michigan football.

Even after all the shady stuff Ohio State did to get Michigan football head coach Jim Harbaugh suspended for the final three games of the regular season, it didn’t matter. The Wolverines still won because Sherrone Moore isn’t afraid of fourth-down calls or big moments — a la Ryan Day.

Smith proved to be as big a crybaby as his head coach and on a radio show last week, said he thought the Michigan football winning streak over Ohio State deserved an asterisk.

Michigan football beat Ohio State fair and square

It’s laughable and we explained why. But Dan Wetzel of Yahoo Sports also took aim at Smith in some comments he made on a podcast. The long-time college football writer called it “weak sauce.” He also took a shot at head coach Ryan Day and here’s the full quote via the Wolverine.

“Calling for an asterisk on this is weak sauce. Just come back and beat them. It is weak sauce. It is the same thing as declaring your team is as tough as can be because you beat Notre Dame and 10 guys in September.”

Wetzel also said that with all the ways signs can be stolen, such as trading with friends who are opposing head coaches (which is what Ohio State reportedly did with Rutgers and others) then it might be a good idea to change your signs before Game 12.

“You’re not supposed to get mugged either,” Wetzel said. “But if you walk down a dark alley with 100-dollar bills…”

We can agree on one thing: Michigan football has owned the Buckeyes for the past three years and no amount of crying is ever going to change that — much to the chagrin of Ryan Day and Gene Smith.
