When talking about the 2023 Michigan football schedule, it’s hard to get many words out without someone pointing out the Wolverines’ weak non-conference games. The Maize and Blue are 3-0 right now heading into Big Ten play after downing a series of lesser teams, including East Carolina, UNLV, and Bowling Green — this weekend’s conference opener will be against Rutgers (3-0). Today, former Ohio State legend and 2015 national champion head coach Urban Meyer slammed Michigan’s scheduling, expressing fear about where everything is heading in the modern era of the College Football Playoff.

Now, before Urban Meyer pointed out his concerns with the 2023 Michigan football schedule, he spoke about the schedules that he used to play during his time at Notre Dame, where he was an assistant coach from 1996-2000.

“I remember, one time, and they were talking about playing a Mid-America (MAC) school, and the administration and alumni said there’s no way we’ll do that,” the former Ohio State legend explained on ‘Urban’s Take With Tim May.’ “We’re never gonna play a lesser opponent. We’re Notre Dame. Now, you look at their schedule, and you’re like, ‘Wait a minute, they’re playing all kinds of teams.’ They’re playing Tennessee State the other day. That would have never, ever happened.

“Then the other thing is now you’re in a 12-game playoff starting next year, and I think these games are going to go away, and I’m scared about that,” Meyer continued. “Look at the team up in Ann Arbor (Michigan football). You shouldn’t be allowed to play that schedule … I’m really disappointed (in the playoff’s impact on scheduling). You’re talking about the Wolverines used to play Notre Dame all the time. They’re not. And you know why — you can say whatever you want — because they don’t want the potential of that loss to hurt them for the playoff.”

Urban Meyer slams Georgia, praises the Buckeyes

Urban Meyer continued on after slamming this year’s Michigan football schedule, targeting another college football giant before praising Ohio State for scheduling Notre Dame this year.

“Georgia is playing a schedule that, at the end of the day, you’re supposed to be penalized for that, and they’re not,” he stated. “So why would Ohio State play this game (against Notre Dame)? Well, because it’s the right thing to do, it’s for the fans, it’s for the good of the game. It’s for everybody.”

It’s worth noting that, next year, Michigan football will face off against Texas and others, not to mention the Big Ten’s new 18-team model, which will add teams like Oregon, Washington, USC, and UCLA to an already tough conference slate.
