Today, following the Wolverines’ 31-6 win over Bowling Green last weekend, transfer cornerback Josh Wallace addressed the media. There, the new Maize and Blue standout defender gave some high praise to a pair of Michigan football freshmen who have been turning heads with the Wolverines thus far. According to Wallace, both are impressive so far, and are going to be great cornerbacks for Michigan someday.

Michigan football freshmen cornerbacks turning heads right now

The Michigan football defensive secondary is banged up right now — that is the unfortunate reality that the Wolverines have to deal with. Last week’s injury report included cornerbacks Amorion Walker (out) and Will Johnson (questionable), as well as safeties Rod Moore (out) and Makari Paige (questionable). With Big Ten play kicking off this weekend, the availability of these four defenders remains unknown.

With injury concerns comes more opportunity for new faces — transfer cornerback Josh Wallace and other rising stars have been standing out thus far, leading the way to Michigan’s No. 1 scoring defense through three weeks of the season. In fact, Wallace has some high praise for a pair of Michigan football freshmen who have caught his eye during his time in Ann Arbor.

“They’re gonna be really good corners,” Josh Wallace said of Michigan football freshman cornerbacks DJ Waller Jr. and Jyaire Hill. “DJ (Waller) — he’s very aggressive. I think he’s from Youngstown, OH, so looking forward to see how he can help us moving forward. And Jyaire (Hill), as well. We call him ‘Sug’ — that is the nickname we got him. They are both great young corners, and I’m excited to see them continue to get a bigger role for us.”

More reps for the rising stars due to injury issues?

With Rutgers coming to town later this week and some defensive back depth concerns, these freshman defenders may see some trial by fire against a Big Ten foe (Rutgers) — one that is coming in with a lot of confidence after destroying Virginia Tech over the weekend.
