For the Michigan women’s golf team, the 2025 season ended at the Big Ten championships with an 8th place finish on April 20. Individually, however, the Wolverines had redshirt sophomore Mara Janess move on to the NCAA regionals. Janess’ season ended earlier this week, but she could lead the team moving forward.

To advance to the NCAA finals, Janess had to shoot the lowest score out of the six total golfers in the Columbus region. Over the course of three rounds (May 5-7), Janess shot 227 (74-79-74), which put her in a tie for 41st place.

In her opening round, Janess began with six straight pars before a bogey on the 7th hole. After two more pars to finish the front, Janess birdied the 10th to get back to even. Bogeys on the 15th and 17th put her back to +2.

The second round was a rollercoaster, as she shot eight bogeys, including a double-bogey on the 6th hole. Janess also made two birdies, but she was in a tough spot after 36 holes (+7). Weather was reportedly a major factor in the tournament, especially on Tuesday.

In Wednesday’s final round, Janess parred the first six holes again, but she bogeyed two of the final three holes on the front nine. For the second time, she started the back with a birdie to get her down to +1 for the round. Unfortunately, Janess followed it up with back-to-back bogeys, though she added another birdie on the 17th before the round was over.

Janess had an impressive sophomore campaign, posting three top-10 finishes and leading the Wolverines in five events. She finished the season with a career-low 73.94 scoring average, including a career-best 69 in the third round of the Chattanooga Classic (March 28-29). Janess also shot a career-best 54-hole score of 212 at the Spartan Sun Coast Invitational (Feb. 16-17).
